The second of July 2024 marked a significant day in the medical community as the General Medical Council (GMC) handed down its decision on its findings of facts in the case involving Mr Dixon, a surgeon who has been under scrutiny for his use of the rectopexy mesh procedure.

Mr Dixon was the subject of a GMC hearing due to allegations surrounding the rectopexy mesh procedure he performed on hundreds of patients between 2010 and 2016.  The tribunal focused on Mr Dixon’s failure to provide adequate clinical care to patients in several areas. These include ensuring that procedures were clinically indicated, adequately advising patients regarding treatment options, obtaining informed consent before performing clinical procedures, adequate performance of the surgery, providing adequate post-operative care, and communicating appropriately with patients and their family members.

In November and December 2018 following assessment by the GMC, Mr Dixon’s performance was considered unacceptable in the areas of assessment and clinical management of pelvic floor patients.  Concerns were also raised about his performance in maintaining professional performance, clinical management of emergencies, and relationships with patients.

The Tribunal’s stage 1, Finding of Facts, concluded that the majority of the allegations brought against Mr Dixon were found not proven. The next stage in the Tribunal is impairment, when the Tribunal looks at whether Mr Dixon’s fitness to practice medicine is impaired.
